About
Powell's Way of Kenpo Martial Arts School
Founded
over 20 years ago, Powell’s Way of Kenpo was formed to teach students
practical, effective martial arts skills. While the root of
our art is Chinese Kenpo Karate, we have incorporated other arts to
form a unique and complete martial arts system that you will not find
anywhere else. Our system starts with the speed and
effectiveness of Kenpo and adds the ground techniques of Brazilian Jiu
Jitsu, the dynamic throws and locks of Aikido, and the internal power
of Tai Chi Chuan.
At Powell's Way of Kenpo,
you will experience practical training for real situations taught in a
dynamic, disciplined way. Here, you will find world-class
instructors and students who are dedicated to training for realistic
situations and developing the skills needed to defend yourself.
We continue to refine our
art to enable us to offer you the most effective self-defense system
available - one that strengthens those qualities that are so important
to surviving today's world: self-confidence, self-discipline, and unity
between a clear, calm mind and a healthy, strong body.
In addition to the fighting arts,
we offer students the healing arts of Yoga and Naturopathy.
The complement of the martial arts and the healing arts provide the
yin/yang dynamic that helps you to maximize your potential.

The
Fighting Arts
Chinese
Kenpo Karate
Kenpo has roots that go back to
China almost 1500 years ago and is the art form from which most other
martial arts stem. When an Indian priest named Bodhidharma
(Tamo) traveled to China, he found the monks of the Shaolin temple to
be in poor health and unable to withstand prolonged
meditation. Bodhidharma taught the monks a series of
exercises meant to strengthen them and develop internal
energy. These forms became the root of Shaolin martial
arts. Retired soldiers who sought refuge at the Shaolin
temple and joined the monks brought with them tried and tested methods
of combat. The monks soon became famous throughout China for
their skills and courage.
Our art was originally known in
China as Chuan Fa. It eventually spread to Japan where it was
known as Kenpo, which means fist (ken) law (po). It was first
introduced to the United States in Hawaii around the time of World War
II. The art of Kenpo soon became very popular in the United
States as one of the most effective systems known.
Brazilian
Jiu Jitsu
Jiu Jitsu is most commonly known as
a ground fighting system used in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and includes
throws, chokes, and locks. The techniques of Jiu Jitsu allow
a smaller person to successfully defend themself against larger
opponents. While some only teach the sport techniques of Jiu
Jitsu, we strive to teach for reality and you will learn techniques
that are effective on the streets where there are no rules.
Aikido
The techniques of Aikido allow you
to blend with your attacker’s energy and redirect it. Aikido
allows a weaker person to apply throws and joint locks against a
stronger opponent by using their attacker’s momentum against
them. By applying the mental and physical aspects of Aikido,
you can defend yourself from an attack without directly opposing your
attacker’s energy.
Tai
Chi Chuan
Tai Chi Chuan translates to mean
Supreme Ultimate Fist. This art is well known for its health
benefits and is extremely effective for self-defense. Through
the practice of Tai Chi Chuan, you will develop internal power to
deliver devastating strikes and control your attacker.
The Healing Arts
Hatha
Yoga
The techniques of Hatha yoga
develop strength, flexibility, and balance in body and mind, creating
inner peace and harmony. Join us for a systematic and thorough
introduction to the practice. You will learn the classical postures
(asanas) and breathing techniques (pranayama) while developing a home
practice routine. For further information, please

as are held by medical societies, but a lifestyle of practices that
build immunity, improve mental health, and enhance body function. Our
belief is that every person has the right to learn of the God-given,
life enhancing practices embodied in Naturopathy that will help you
maintain mental, physical, and emotional health.
